ARCH 502 INTEGRATED DESIGN STUDIO (2-2) 3

In Master’s studies theoretical knowledge and practical knowledge are both researched and developed. In this context, as a studio course with a holistic approach, in which theoretical and practical knowledge will be reinforced, this course has an important place in the master’s program. It is an elective course. Students are expected to analyze information in the field of design and synthesize them with an integrated approach. Design solutions are sought within the scope of the project, which is determined for the design problems where many different systems in the construction processes are integrated. Students present their studies as architectural projects at the end of the semester. With this course, it is aimed that students become more aware of the importance of integrating the different systems of the building in the design process. It is also aimed in this course to students to learn how to demonstrate and develop different methods in this integration process, to comprehend the importance and collaboration with other stakeholders in order to develop design knowledge, to transform theoretical knowledge into professionally applicable information and to increase their design power.

Modeling of 2D and 3D trusses. Modeling of 2D and 3D frames. Analysis under gravity and dead loads.

ARCH 505 OTTOMAN-TURKISH ARCHITECTURE IN THE 19TH AND EARLY 20TH CENTURIES (3-0) 3

The main aim of this course is to make students question the architectural environment and its production in parallel with the developments in the 19th century and the early 20th century that took its place in the historiography as the “longest century of the Ottoman Empire”. The new program needs that emerged in the Ottoman Empire in this century and their architectural reflections will be questioned within the framework of writing style and architectural history.

ARCH 506 HISTORY OF SETTLEMENTS IN CAPPADOCIA (3-0) 3

Within the scope of this course, architecture and settlement history extending from Neolithic period mounds to today will be analyzed through readings focusing on Cappadocia. Through these readings, it will be possible to look at the Anatolian geography and history, the interactions of cultures that have followed and / or faced each other on these lands, and the relationships between the changing administrative centers and the geographical establishments that this geography has established. Lessons will be conducted through readings and their discussion. In addition, each student is expected to write an article on a research topic to be determined.

ARCH 507 BRIDGING THE GAP: HOUSING BETWEEN THE ‘ATRIUM HOUSE’ AND THE ‘HAYAT HOUSE’ IN EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN (3-0) 3

This course will focus on the residential architecture in the Eastern Mediterranean basin and Anatolia in the Middle Ages. The course, which questions the architecture of the residence between the Late Antique period and the Ottoman period, aims to investigate the intercultural interactions and the origin and continuity of architectural elements such as atrium, courtyard and ‘hayat’. Lessons will be conducted through readings and their discussion. In addition, each student is expected to write an article on a research topic to be determined.

ARCH 508 LIGHTING IN ARCHITECTURE (3-0) 3

In this course, the basic principles of lighting, light, color, perception and the way they are reflected in architectural design, lighting physics, brightness level calculation, artificial lighting, natural lighting, sun / shadow analysis, daylight factor, appropriate lighting design options for different building types will be analyzed.

ARCH 509 PRINCIPLES OF SUSTAINABLE BUILDING DESIGN (3-0) 3

Within the scope of this course, current information about the basic principles of sustainable building design, structure-environment relationship, environmental sustainability, life cycle assessment, resource conservation, waste management and related legislation is conveyed.

ARCH 510 LEGAL ASPECTS OF PRESERVATION IN TURKEY (3-0) 3

For the most part of the course, the discussions will be on the emergence and rationale of the legislations on protection from the last century of the Ottoman Empire to the present day. In the last part, discussions will be made on the issues of unresolved legislation in the context of protection, to what extent it will be sufficient in the protection processes on its own. The term will be completed with a general repetition.

ARCH 511 UNDERSTANDING THE CONCEPT OF ARCHITECTURAL RESTORATION (3-0) 3

Conservation terminology and brief history of architectural restoration will be emphasized at the beginning of the period. Then, the concepts of value, culture, education, needs and demand, belonging and ownership, legislation, politics, media that shape today’s architectural conservation will be discussed. The last three weeks will include a review of the knowledge gained from previous discussion processes and the presentation of term papers to be prepared by students on previously selected topics.
